Welcome to Roland Mechael’s online portfolio!
Roland Mechael’s love for painting landscapes and photography shows his sense of drama and staging in every piece of his work. He believes that every scene should evoke a sense of mystery and a feeling of nostalgia to make you feel like you were part of the scene. The following Environment artworks were executed for Superbook’s CG adventure for Adam and Eve’s bible story “Creation”, The next few pieces were Visual Development Environment Art pieces inspired by JR Tolkien's Lord of the rings series of books/movies. Some of the images were released as part of the art of Faerywinkle sketchbook app. Most were done using Adobe photoshop and a few were sketched with graphite. My very first story sketch test for Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. Inspired by Aaron Blaise’s Bear drawings which I saw early on as we’re about to start the project. Aaron’s work has always been a constant inspiration which kept me going as I worked on this test. Characters inspired by Frank Frazetta’s Fire and Ice and Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke. Ive been always a fan of Disney’s classic storyboards so I tried to emulate the look. I used colored pencils and watercolor on this one and finished it around 2 weeks!

A Christmas Story
A quick story sketch test inspired by Norman Rockwell’s painting titled “Discovery” which is part of Norman Rockwell’s Pictures of the American people exhibit in High Art Museum at Atlanta, Georgia. As the saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words.. in Roland Mechael’s mind a heartwarming story about the discovery unfolds the beauty of giving and the spirit of the Christmas season.
